BECKY FLOWERS - A TOUCH-PAPER COLLABORATION (USA)
I believe in the right and necessity of human expression against the corporatizing influences of modern culture. I believe the primary tool and expression of our humanity is the artistic voice.
My work has been largely dictated by the unique circumstance of time and place; in that time and place the pieces have ranged from nostalgic investigations into history to the social implications of identity. The work often portrays the individual character trapped in philosophical systems. By connecting the audience with the character, often through the portrayal of risk, the politics of the work emerges. As an artist, I work with writing, fine art and performance modalities, but I have been primarily engaged in the space of performance art. I remain most interested in performance as a means of charging spaces, animating texts, creating multi-dimensional visual environments, and creating dialogue between audience and performer.
My work always begins with a fragment – an image, gesture, or text – somewhat diffident. It is at this point that I question the image until a piece of art emerges, my process one of research and improvisation. It is my hope that these fragments engage our collective humanity.
